A range of fun and relaxing wood carving workshops taking place at the Wilderness Gathering 2017.


With expert guidance and tuition, learn how to carve your own beautiful wooden art spoon or pendant in Giles Newman’s unique style with the simple, easy to learn knife techniques that he has developed. These spoon and pendant carving workshops are suitable for all levels of carving experience; whether you’re a newcomer to the world of carving or just looking to enhance and build upon previous experience. Learn how to create your own unique pieces of wood art with nothing more than a knife and a little imagination. An infinitely portable and transferable skill set (and toolkit) that will give you the freedom to carve creatively whether at home or out in the wilderness.

Art Spoon Carving Workshops

Friday 18th August – Full Day Workshop (10am – 5pm)

Encompassing the whole process of art spoon carving from sustainable wood selection and design principles to knife work, detailing and finishing you will gain a strong foundation of knowledge and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything. With a strong focus on Giles’ principles of working in harmony with, and understanding the characteristics of the wood, participants of this workshop will design and hand carve their own unique pieces to take away with them.
Tools and spoon blanks will be provided.

Sunday 20th August – Half Day Workshop (10am – 2pm)

A shorter version of the full day workshop (see above), this half day workshop focuses on design principles and knife handling techniques that work with the natural features and characteristics of the wood to create uniquely beautiful hand carved spoons that can be as artful and functional as you wish. Ideal for newcomers to carving looking for an introduction to the artform as well as for those with some experience of carving by knife already who wish to learn detail and decorative knife work techniques.
Tools and spoon blanks will be provided.

Pendant Carving Workshops

Thursday 17th, Saturday 19th August (10am – 1pm)

Learn to hand carve unique wooden pendants, develop knife handling skills and master decorative, detail carving techniques with just one knife. The only limit is your imagination. Tools, templates, necklace cord, fixings and a wide range of part-carved pendant blanks will be provided.

One to One Wood Carving Tuition

Available all year round in Lancashire. England.

Learn the art of carving wooden spoons and pendants with one-to-one tuition from Giles Newman.

Available all year round on an hour-by-hour basis or in block bookings from a couple of hours to several days, learning to carve with one-to-one expert guidance you can advance your skills quickly, following a course individually designed to suit your needs and your experience level. Whether you’re a complete beginner, eager to learn new skills or an experienced wood carver looking to hone your detail carving work, Giles will devise a personalised course to suit.

Learn everything from sustainable wood selection and design principles to tool selection, decorative knife work and finishing, you will develop a strong understanding and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything, not limited to spoons! 

All tools, wood for carving and an endless supply of hot drinks are provided though you’re welcome to bring your own tools and materials if you would prefer.

One-to-one sessions start at £25 for a one hour session with discounted prices for longer sessions.

A fun and relaxing weekend of wood carving workshops, camping out in the Lancashire countryside.

With expert guidance and tuition throughout the weekend, the Wood Carving Weekenders are suitable for all levels of carving experience; whether you’re a newcomer to the world of carving or just looking to enhance and build upon previous experience. Beyond the group workshops, there will be plenty of time for one to one tuition, support and advice to suit your individual needs.

Encompassing the whole process of spoon carving from sustainable wood selection and spoon design principles to tool selection, knife work and finishing you will gain a strong foundation of knowledge and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything, not limited to spoons! With a strong focus on my principles of working with, and understanding the characteristics of the wood, participants of this two day workshop will design and hand carve their own unique wooden spoons to take away with them.

With the camp fire burning and tools put away, the Saturday evening will be an opportunity to relax, ease aching hands and talk with likeminded people, sharing experiences and knowledge and forging new friendships.

All weekend courses include overnight camping (please bring your own tent), campfire cooked lunches on both days, all tools, wood for carving and an endless supply of hot drinks.

You also have the option to buy and take home the tools you will be using during the weekend; a Morakniv 120 Carving Knife and a Hans Karlsson Hook. Included in the tool kit will be two silver birch spoon blanks and finishing paper to take home with you. If you are travelling from outside the UK and can’t bring your own tent I can arrange for one to be provided for you. Please email me for more details once you have booked your place. 

Places will be limited to 10 per weekend to ensure that everyone gets the most from their experience.

Arrivals between 5pm and 10pm on the Friday night or on Saturday morning from 8am. Workshops start at 10am Saturday morning.
